How to test mechanical properties of shear stud?

https://www.sinostoneltd.com/mechanical-properties-of-shear-stud/

Metals used in fastener(shear stud, bolt, etc) manufacture are elastic materials which will stretch (elongate) under applied loads and return to their original shape when the load is removed. However, if sufficient load is applied, the material will stretch beyond its yield point and enter a plastic zone, losing its elasticity and becoming permanently stretched. Further increased load on the material will stretch it to its ultimate tensile strength at which point the material will fracture.
The major factor in determining the load a material can carry is its tensile strength, which is related to its hardness. The terms used to describe the strength and load-bearing properties of a metal fastener are:
Tensile Strength – is an expression of the maximum capacity of a particular material to stretch under tension load prior to failure.
Yield Point – is an expression of the theoretical point of stress (pressure) beyond which the material loses its elasticity and becomes permanently stretched (realistically, a range rather than a single point).
Proof Load Stress – is an expression of the minimum stress a material must achieve, prior to permanent elongation and, the stress which would be applied to test and remeasure a specific fastener to prove it had not permanently stretched and that it will carry the required load. These terms will also include a unit of area, are approximately between 80% and 90% of the theoretical yield stress and are expressed in the same terms. Proof load stresses also apply to nuts and are the point at which the nut is deemed to have failed.
Mechanical properties of shear stud

Tensile Strength: the maximum load-carrying point prior to fracture.
Yield Point: the point at which elasticity is lost and permanent elongation commences.
Proof Load: the minimum point prior to permanent elongation and the test point for actual proof load testing.
Simple understanding for mechanical properties of shear stud

There are three main mechanical properties of shear stud: Tensile strength, yield point(or yield strength), elongation. Sometimes reduction of area is mentioned.

You can find the result from the above image:
Tensile strength: 437Mpa
Yield strength: 375Mpa
Elongation: 25%

Now please see a good video for testing mechanical properties of shear stud:
Sino Stone produce shear stud strictly according the ISO13918:2008 standard to match the mechanical properties(tensile strength≥450Mpa, yield strength≥350Mpa, elongation≥15%), if you want to know more or purchase, please send inquiry to info@sinostoneltd.com

Mechanical Property Requirement for Shear Connector as per AWS D1.1

This article contains general requirements for welding of steel studs to steel, and stipulates specific requirements:
(1) For workmanship, preproduction testing, operator qualification, and application qualification testing when required, all to be performed by the Contractor
(2) For fabrication/erection and verification inspection of stud welding during production
(3) For mechanical properties of steel studs, and requirements for qualification of stud bases, all tests and documentation to be furnished by the stud manufacturer.

General Requirements
1.Stud Design. Studs shall be of suitable design for arc welding to steel members with the use of automatically timed stud welding equipment. The type and size of the stud shall be as specified by the drawings, specifications, or special provisions. For headed-type studs, see Figure 7.1. Alternative head configurations may be used with proof of mechanical and embedment tests confirming full-strength development of the design, and with the approval of the Engineer.

How to source shear stud from China?

Lots of customers inquired us to source shear stud from China through emails. Some of them is first time to source shear stud from China and they don’t know how to choose reliable suppliers, such as raw material, packaging, delivery, payment terms, shipping, etc. Parts of them choose lower price but the quality can’t match their requirement. And even the sample is OK but the bulk product is bad. Because there are too many bad suppliers give them very low price with low quality.

Good articles were not founded when I searched how to source shear stud from China on Google, so I write this article. No matter you are purchasing shear stud from China online, or actually visit China in person, you will find this article very informative and useful.

Bend testing

The test serves as a simple bench test for approximate checking of the chosen welding data. In the test, the weld is subjected to bending in an undefined manner. If arc blow or another visible imperfection is suspected, the stud shall be bent in a manner such that the area to be examined is in the tension zone. This can be done by one of the two following methods.
  1. The studs are bent through 60° using drawn arc stud welding with ceramic ferrule or shielding gas, or short-cycle drawn arc stud welding, through 30° using capacitor discharge stud welding with tip ignition or capacitor discharge drawn arc stud welding(see the following figure)
  2. The studs are stressed by applying a bending moment below the elastic limit
Note: Values of bending moments for studs by applications > 100 °C are given in following Table

Symbols and Abbreviated terms in ISO13918:2008

There are 21 symbols and abbreviated terms in ISO13918:2008(E), today I’ll show you their meaning, hope it can help you understanding the standards.
Some guys normally can’t understand the meaning of drawing of shear stud because of the symbols and abbreviated terms in ISO13918, as a matter of fact, it it easy to remember. Now please see the following:
b   length of the thread
Cd  depth of the crack in the head
d1  nominal diameter
d2  diameter at the weld area
d3  diameter of the weld collar
d4  diameter of the tip
d5  head diameter of headed studs
D6  internal thread diameter
D7  nominal diameter of the ceramic ferrule
d8  grip diameter
d9  base diameter of the ceramic ferrule
h1  height of the frange
h2  height of the ceramic ferrule
h3  height of the head on headed stud
h4  height of the weld collar
h5  height of the unthreaded part of stud types PS and PT
